THIRTY anglers lined up for the penultimate match in Newton Anglers' Association's summer series of open sweepstakes.

The event was held on pegs 32 to 62 at the upper pound section of the Sankey St. Helens Canal.

Consistent match weights and quality fish was the order of the day.

Short pole specialist Barry Holbrook came out on top with a large bream and skimmers, on peg 42, weighing in at 8lbs 4ozs 0drms.

Second place went to Stan Roberts. Fishing with casters on peg 57, he reeled in bream and roach to 7-6-0.

Ray Bowden secured third spot on peg 34 while Mark McClymont finished fourth on peg 47. Their nets of fish weighed in at 6-4-0 and 6-2-8 respectively.

Dave Noble was the star of the show in the association's latest over 60s and disabled sweepstake, which was held at the same venue.

He won the 28-strong event, which was fished on pegs 25-55. He took three quality bream and a large number of small silver fish using long pole tactics on peg 30.

Noble's catch weighed in at 10-9-8 while veteran match ace Kenny Graham finished second with a net of quality bream, roach and rudd weighing 5-0-0. Graham used pole-fished punch on peg 32.

Third spot went to Geoff Brooks. He caught plenty of silver fish and a large bream using pole tactics on peg 29.

On the pleasure angling scene, the day ticket stretches on the upper and lower pounds of the canal have been producing good sport.

Small silver fish, maggot and caster have all been producing the goods while Roy Brown has reported catching a 20-8-0 carp using floating crust up by Bradleigh lock.

Junior members coaching sessions start on the upper pound on June 21. Go to the swing bridge at 3pm. Permits will be needed.

The Yew Tree Reservoir at Haydock, which will be closed on Sunday morning for the committee versus workers match, has been fishing well for tench, carp, bream and silver fish.

Sport has also been good at the Vulcan Reservoir. An abundance of silver fish have been taken on pole-fished maggot, bread or caster while tench, carp to 18lbs and ornamental fish have also been showing.
