I REFER to your story in the Guardian on November 13, regarding the police charging Mr Alan Chester for trying to protect himself and his property from yobs who caused thousands of pounds worth of damage.
We should perhaps require all budding police officers in the training school to answer a multi-choice question. For instance, you are called to a house by the owner, and find his property being damaged, he himself under threat, do you...
A) arrest the law-abiding citizen, protecting himself and property?
B) Arrest the yobs who were causing the damage and are laughing about it?
C) None of these.
It may answer the question that the Prime Minister is asking: why the yobs are getting off scott free? The law-abiding citizen remains the victim with no recourse.
