PHOENIX Olympic Boxing Centre stormed to victory in their team match with Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire Amateur Boxing Association on Saturday.

They won the event at the Vida Warrington soccer complex 7-4 and their star performer was team captain Gareth Paget.

The 19-year-old welterweight picked up the boxer of the night award for his scintillating performance against Kevin Johnson.

Paget was far too mobile and aggressive for his opponent and he was a unanimous winner on points.

Phoenix's other points winners were 11-year-old Courtney Chadwick and 14-year-old Ryan Beecham.

Middleweight Christopher Brennan, aged 20, and light heavyweight Jamie Brown, aged 25, recorded first round victories for Phoenix.

Light welterweight Matt Blackburn, aged 19, was impressive in his bout. He out-punched Steven Templeman three-to-one but lost after what his coach Damien Ridpath described as the worst points decision he has seen in 10 years.

The other Phoenix boxers to lose on points were 11-year-old Keiron Burgess and 25-year-old welterweight Liam Cavanagh.

Saturday's event also incorporated two support bouts.

Phoenix ace Sean Holt, aged 17, suffered a narrow points defeat at the hands of Oliver Reynolds while clubmate Michael Jenkins, aged 12, was a comprehensive points winner against Mark Heffron.

Anyone wishing to join the Phoenix club should go along to training at 6.30pm on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Sessions are held at William Beamont High School's west gym and more information is available from Damien on 07787 531346.
