TEARS of joy flowed down her cheek as a fanfare heralded the arrival of the Queen at Liverpool Cathedral.

Great-great gran Alice Fagan, 98, was overwhelmed with emotion as she received Maundy money from her majesty.

"When everyone sang, her tears flowed," said her daughter, Marjorie Moss, who accompanied her to the centenary ceremony.

"Her majesty leaned down and placed both bags under her thumb as she is registered blind.

"It was a lovely atmosphere, so uplifting and full of love."

Alice was one of six Widnes parishioners joining 78 men and 78 women, for this ancient ceremony.

Wearing a cherry red wool coat, silk suit and a pink feather in her hat, Alice was applauded as she left Hannah & Olivia Court.

Recipients, chosen for their church service, received a red purse containing an allowance for clothing and provisions and a payment for the redemption of the royal gown plus a white purse with Maundy coins.

"As we were taken to lunch afterwards at Liverpool Town Hall, all the crowds were cheering and clapping," said Marjorie.

"My mum put her hand up like the Queen. I asked her afterwards if she enjoyed the day and she said 'Immensely'. It was wonderful from beginning to end."
