A CRASH left a man trapped in a car with serious injuries in Fairfield Road on Thursday night at 10pm.
He was the driver of a Ford Orion that was in a head on collision with a Volvo 240.
Firefighters were the first on the scene but they had to contend with anxious relatives and groups of nearby teenagers as they tried to assess the damage.
The Volvo was carrying two middle aged couples, including two sisters.
One of the passengers, a 58-year-old woman, received head injuries, and the other three received less serious injuries.
The Orion was left on the pavement and was driven by a 21-year-old man who suffered a smashed femur and head injuries.
His leg was injured by broken plastic fitting and the door was crushed, pinning him in the car. He had to be cut free before he was taken to Whiston hospital.
His passenger, a 15-year-old, had serious injuries and was treated at Whiston.
Police say the conditions of all the injured are improving.
The cause of the accident is under investigation.
Call PC Colin Millar at the traffic unit on 01244-613761.
