WARRINGTON Wolves Academy under 18s Rugby League team had to hang on grimly to claim their first Junior Academy League grading phase victory at Wilderspool on Saturday.

They had started brightly and took a 22-0 lead in the opening 28 minutes against Halifax but failed to score again while the visitors responded with 18 points of their own.

Warrington's try scorers were Mike Johnson, 12 minutes; Ian Wilkinson, 16 minutes; Luke Murfin, 20 minutes and Craig Ashall, who also did the converting, 28 minutes.

Wolves had overwhelmed their opponents with attractive open rugby but they then started producing unforced errors.

Halifax sensed this was their chance to respond and pulled a try back before half-time and added three more in the second half.

Wolves: Ian Langley; David Yii, Danny Aboushakra, Ian Wilkinson, Mark Omar; Craig Ashall, Chris Hull; Matthew Bryers, Mike Johnson, Phil Cheetham, Matthew Clarke, Kyle Neal, Luke Murfin. Subs: Jordan Foy, Dave Saxon, Craig Tipene, Andy Moulsdale.

On Saturday Wolves play away to London Broncos at Brunel University, Osterley, kick-off 2.30pm.
