LEISURE facilities for young people in Cinnamon Brow face an overhaul thanks to a cash award from the Community Life Line Fund.

The £5,000 grant, using cash from Warrington Drugs Action Team, which supports initiatives in the community that cover drugs awareness or prevention issues, will go directly to Cinnamon Brow youth club.

Work is expected to get under way next week, with plans to create a television room, a computer room and space for a pool table, as well as complete redecoration of the facilities.

Once completed, the refurbished section of the community farm will form a fully operational youth facility, inspired by ideas from youth club members.

Mick Curran, chairman of the Cinnamon Brow Residents Association, said: "Everything here will be the result of input and feedback from the young people. They came up with what they wanted. The residents' association applied for the grant but the youth club came up with the ideas."

The cash will be split so that £1,000 will pay for the start up of a children's football team and the hiring of a referee and extra equipment.

He added: "Our aim here is to get the kids off the street and to make the facilities here at the club more appealing to them.

"This is the most vital part of our work, to get them off the streets and into a safe environment where they are away from drink and drugs.

"We have listened to what they want and the cash we've been awarded will help pay for those things.

"The main reason kids are on the streets is because there's nowhere for them to go - well, they can come here.

"It's not council-run, its run by the residents and we are prepared to listen to what they want."
