ON a weekend of controversy at Knowsley Road, a happier note was struck when club director and former chairman, Eric Ashton was made a Life President of Saints before Good Friday's derby clash with Wigan Warriors.
A true RL legend, former Wigan and Great Britain captain Ashton, received the honour, and a glass vase to mark the occasion, from the Knowsley Road club's current chairman, Eamonn McManus.
Gentleman Eric is no stranger to accolades, having been the first RL player to be honoured by the Queen when he was made an MBE in 1966, as well as having been capped by Great Britain 26 times.
