A WINSFORD man walking along the A533 bypass died from his injuries after he was in collision with a car travelling along the road in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The accident happened at 1.05am, when the 30-year-old pedestrian was walking towards his Winsford home, near the Jack Lane junction to Moulton.

A Cheshire Police spokesman said: "A 30 year old man was walking along the bypass when he was in collision with a Citroen Saxo being driven by a local man, also from Winsford.

"As a result of the collision, the pedestrian sustained fatal injuries."

An ambulance crew rushed to the scene but a spokesman for Mersey Regional Ambulance Service said that even though somebody had administered CPR to the pedestrian, it was in vain.

Traffic officers are conducting an investigation into the accident and have issued an urgent appeal to anybody with information or who was travelling along the road at the time to call them on 01606 48000.

One Winsford resident who wants to remain anonymous contacted the Guardian after the accident and said: "We drove past at about 12.30am on Sunday and were driving towards Winsford.

"We saw a man on the left hand side of the road dressed all in black and he was walking in the cycle lane."

He added: "It really needs a pathway down there. I drive down there every day and night to and from work and every day I see people walking down the road.

"They either have to walk on the grass verge which means they have to walk through mud or if it has been raining, they have to walk in the cycle lane, which puts them far too close to the traffic.

"I suspect that it was inevitable that something like this would happen.

"I just hope that something is done before someone else gets seriously injured or killed."
