MEASURES are being taken to keep roads in Sankey Bridges clean, says the residents' association.
The group has spoken out following a letter published in the Warrington Guardian (April 1) that stated: "Liverpool Road looks just like an extension to the Arpley landfill site."
Roy Dixon, of Liverpool Road, wrote: "It is so dirty, with unsightly vegetation growing along the walls, rubbish, litter, dirt, dust and dog mess everywhere."
He said that the areas around bus shelters are a disgrace and that waste lorries deposit rubbish and litter all over the road and in people's front gardens.
But Dave Birchall, chairman of Sankey Bridges Residents' Association, said that action taken to tackle the problem is working.
He said: "We have been fighting for a couple of years to have a clean up in the area and the borough council responded by giving us more frequent road- sweeping, which is twice a week at least.
"The new Street Scene scheme is also keeping things under control to a certain extent.
"As far as the lorries are concerned, the volume of traffic is not as bad, as they have been rerouted.
He added that educating people in the area was another important part of the process.
He said: "If I see rubbish I go and pick it up and don't rely on somebody else. It's something that is the responsibility of residents themselves to a certain degree."
He said that all residents are welcome to come along to meetings of Sankey Bridges Residents' Association, which take place on the second Wednesday of every month.
