SHOPPERS, passers-by and parishioners from 10 churches joined together for an open air service on Good Friday.

It was the first time that the Easter event had taken place, but it looks set to become a permanent fixture in the Penketh calendar.

The congregation in Honiton Square was welcomed by the Reverend Alan Kennedy of St Philip's Church in Westbrook.

Speaking before the service began, he said: "It is a chance for the churches to come together for a service and for shoppers to join in and people who might not normally come to church. It will become an annual event."

People sang hymns, accompanied by musicians from St Paul's Church in Penketh, and listened to readings during the half hour celebration.

West Warrington churches Bethany Pentecostal in Sankey Bridges, Hood Manor Methodist, Jireh Brethren in Lingley Mere, King's Church in Great Sankey, Penketh Methodist, St James Westbrook, St Joseph's RC in Penketh, St Mary's in Great Sankey, St Paul's in Penketh and St Philip's in Westbrook were all represented at the service.
