IN a drive to get more elderly people to claim the benefits they are entitled to, Helen Jones MP will be holding a surgery at Asda Birchwood, writes Jenni Carroll.

The surgery from 10.30am to noon on Thursday, April 22, is being held as part of Age Concern's Your Rights Week.

The Warrington North MP said: "Your Rights Week is a crucial awareness raising event which can make a practical difference to the financial situations of thousands of older people. Older people are more likely than other groups to miss out on benefits, including pension credit, housing benefit, council tax benefit or non-means tested cash, such as attendance allowance."

Sharon Gleave, of the Pension Service, will also be on hand to answer queries.

Mrs Jones said: "Some older people don't realise they are entitled and others feel put off by the system or feel there is a stigma attached to claiming so just make do."

A free 12-page booklet outlining how to claim key money benefits is available from Age Concern.
