A DRUG addict was jailed for two years after police found crack cocaine and heroin in his house.

Officers raided Philip Shaw's home on October 15 and found bags of crack cocaine worth £400 and just under a gramme of heroin.

Some bags were lying on Shaw's kitchen table but he pulled out more, hidden in a chair, when asked.

A body search also revealed two wraps of powder, which Shaw said were his own drugs.

Clare Stuart, prosecuting, told Liverpool Crown Court Shaw made a full and frank admission of his involvement with drugs, after being taken to Kirkby police station.

Shaw told police he spent about £300 a week on his drug habit. The court heard he had previous convictions but had never served a custodial sentence.

He said he had run into debt and had been under pressure to get involved in drug dealing. His barrister said Shaw had acted out of character and there was no suggestion he had distributed drugs.

Shaw, aged 37, of Alpine Street, Newton, pleaded guilty to two offences of possessing drugs with intent to supply.

Jailing him on April 6, Judge Elizabeth Steel said that the drugs had been delivered on the day of the raid and none had been supplied before the officers arrived.

She accepted he had been under pressure, had been afraid about the safety of his son, aged 10, and if he had supplied he would have been paid in drugs not cash.

But, she said: "Whether paid in cash or drugs it is a serious matter which can only properly be marked by a term of imprisonment."
