IT was an Easter treat for Vikings fans as Widnes resurrected their season in spectacular fashion with two wins on the bounce, writes Nick Lakeman.

Neil Kelly's battling side, led by mercurial stand-off Jules O'Neill, surprised critics and supporters alike with unexpected wins against arch rivals Warrington and high-flying Hull.

"It has certainly been a better week," the Vikings coach said. "We are a lot happier now than we were seven days ago.

"The win at Warrington was a massive morale boost and in beating Hull we showed that we have some special players at the club.

"After experiencing four defeats we were looking for a foot-hold to stop ourselves sliding and the wins have changed the direction our season was going and we are now looking for a third," he said.

The Vikings had looked like easy pickings for Warrington Wolves going into Good Friday's game but win-hungry Widnes became the first side to win at the Halliwell-Jones stadium, scoring 24 points to 16.

Kelly's side then proved it wasn't just a one-off performance by overcoming early fatigue to beat Hull 32-18 with a dominant display.

"We looked tired at the start but did very well and showed great character to claw our way back into the game," Kelly said.

"We did not give in or panic and were totally dominant by the end. It is up to us build on these wins and not rest on them."

Widnes will take an unchanged squad to London Broncos after coming through two games in four days relatively unscathed.

Stephen Myler will continue to deputise at scrum half while the club searches for the reinforcements Kelly believes are vital to maintain momentum.

"The squad we have got is small and every time someone goes down you do worry, but the board are aware of this and we are still looking for the right people," he said.
