REWARDING, challenging and exciting.
That's how a team of volunteers have described a pioneering course to become Halton's first community parents.
"I found it very rewarding and made new friends," said Sue Rawlinson. "I have really enjoyed the course."
Stefnie Rathbone, said: "I wanted to become a community parent to understand more about the problems within families. I'm looking forward to using my new skills."
Stefnie hopes to develop a career in social care.
Carol Dodd, said: "I am interested in working in the community with both children and families."
Volunteers answered an appeal in the World, in January, for patient mums and dads to provide confidential support for families.
Claire Fyles, community parent co-ordinator, is now looking for recruits to join the next course, starting in May.
She said: "The training is accredited by the Merseyside Open College Network and covers a wide range of topics.
"Volunteers can expect ongoing training and support from myself and other community parents."
Stefnie says she is looking forward to working with families. She said: "I'm nervous, but excited! The other community parents are all really friendly so I know I have back up and support if I need it."
If you are a good listener and have a sensitive, non judgemental approach, call Claire Fyles on 0151-422 0595. She is also keen to hear from any families interested in receiving support. Claire is based at the Kings Cross Project, 2 Kipling Crescent, Widnes.
