CONGLETON Town had to settle for a 1-1 draw on Tuesday night in an end to end last home match of the season.

The Bears were held by lowly St Helens in an entertaining clash following a defeat on Saturday.

Congleton went down 4-1 at title contenders Clitheroe, who are vying for the championship.

Congleton had to play for 34 minutes with 10 men after the dismissal of keeper Matthew Conkie.

The Bears had the ball in the net in the first minute against St Helens, but Scully's goal was ruled out for offside.

The visitors took the lead the next minute when they broke down the right and their centre forward rifled the ball into the top corner of the net.

Congleton hit back on 10 minutes at the end of a good move between Simm and Worthington, Simm firing low past the keeper.

The Bears almost took the lead in the second half after being awarded a free kick outside the area.

Bickerstaffe knocked the ball in for Williams to fire in a volley which squeezed under the keeper.

However he reacted in time to stop the ball rolling over the line.

Clitheroe took the lead on 12 minutes on Saturday with a shot across Conkie from Cryer from 15 yards out.

The title chasers went two goals up in fortunate circumstances a minute before half-time.

A hard driven cross played into the Congleton box flicked the fingertips of a Bears' player, and Hart scored from the penalty spot, despite Conkie getting a hand to the ball.

Conkie showed his frustration by kicking the ball out of the ground, earning him a yellow card which proved crucial later in the match.

Clitheroe scored their third 11 minutes into the second half with their second penalty of the game.

A Clitheroe player was brought down in the box by Conkie as he tried to go around the keeper.

Hart stepped up to convert his second penalty of the game, and Conkie was sent off after being booked for the second time.

The Bears pulled a goal back on 64 minutes with a shot across the keeper from 10 yards out from Williams.

Clitheroe made it 4-1 12 minutes when McDonald lashed a dipping shot over the head of Simm, who replaced Conkie in goal.

Congleton travel to Nantwich tomorrow and Glossop next Tuesday.
