ALSAGER schoolchildren are in line for action to help them enjoy a safer journey to school.

Parents of children at Cranberry Junior and Infant Schools and Pikemere Primary School have asked for improved crossing facilities.

In the case of the Cranberry schools they are seeking an improved crossing at the junction of Chancery Lane and Crewe Road.

Pikemere parents want a better crossing at the junction of Pikemere Road and Sandbach Road North.

The schools could benefit under plans to spend £100,000 this year on traffic calming measures across Alsager.

Some 14 roads have been identified for potential action to cut accidents and speeds and protect residents and schoolchildren.

Each scheme will be looked at in detail and costed with a view to drawing up a priority list.

The £100,000 funding will enable a number of the schemes to proceed this year.

Among the proposals are to introduce a 20 miles an hour speed limit in Cranberry Lane and Pikemere Road, along with road humps to physically cut speeds.

A report to the joint highways committee said average speed in Cranberry Lane, a narrow winding residential road, was 29 miles an hour, which was excessive for the area.

The speed limit in Cranberry Lane is 30 miles an hour, the same as in Pikemere Road, where average speed was found to be 36 miles an hour, again judged to be excessive.

The 14 roads were pinpointed as a result of requests from councillors and residents and accident and speed analysis.
