A MAN was hit with a hammer after telling off vandals in Newton.

The 35-year-old man saw a group of teenagers with a man aged 18 to 23 about to damage houses on Clarence Street.

He confronted them but the older vandal pulled a hammer from behind his back and struck his victim four times on his shoulders and back causing cuts and bruising.

Police are appealing for witnesses. The man, aged 18 to 23, is described as medium build, with short dark hair, and was wearing a light-coloured top and dark trousers.
