THE Dallam and District Angling Group held its first youth competition with the aid of cash from the Department of Education and Skills.

The group received more than £1,500 earlier this year from the department's community champions fund.

It used the money for equipment for the club's younger members.

Twelve youngsters, aged between 10 and 15, played in the first youth match on Easter Sunday.

Louis Morris, chairman of the group, said: "It was a good turnout and the kids really enjoyed themselves."

Oliver Ardman scooped a gold medal for coming first, with Peter Wharfon and Nina Ford getting silver and bronze respectively.

All the competitors received medals and Easter eggs for taking part.

The club now hopes to hold regular youth tournaments.
