FORMER Warrington market traders Fred and Jessie Bailey played a key part in George Formby's life.

The couple, who have since died, had a fruit and vegetable stall on Warrington market when it stood in Market Gate.

George and his wife Beryl regularly travelled by train to George's performances. When the train stopped at Bank Quay station, Fred and Jessie Bailey would hand George and Beryl a basket of fruit and vegetables for their journey.

Stan Evans, editor of the George Formby newsletter, said: "Fred and Jessie were very well known in Warrington. I understand they won trophies for their displays."

Meanwhile, fans can pay tribute at a special event at Wigan Pier on May 23. The concert and exhibition of memorabilia will also be a reunion of old Formby friends.

Tickets are £2 and are available from Alan Chenery on 07967 665069 or Pat Ralston on 01925 655215.
