BULLDOZERS will move in to demolish the Birchdale Hotel after residents in Appleton lost a hard-fought planning row to keep it standing.

Last week, a Government inspector gave the green light for blueprints to raze the hotel to the ground and build 24 new apartments.

Residents, who waged a year long battle against developers Linden Homes, have slammed the decision and say their concerns have been ignored.

Dave Betts, who lives on Kingsley Drive, spoke of their disappointment, adding: "We feel that the concerns of many residents have not been taken into account.

"The development and size is so out of keeping with the whole surrounding environment and this quiet residential area. To argue that the development will not make a difference is nonsense."

But the inspector ruled that the level of traffic would not compromise safety and the apartments would 'add to the housing mix in the area'.

The report mentioned that the existing Birchdale Hotel had not been trading well and was in need of refurbishment.

Village campaigners believe that the apartments will be out of character with the cottages, bungalows and detached houses in the area.

Fears grew that increased traffic from the apartments could make driving hazardous down the narrow Birchdale Road.

The public inquiry was scheduled after Linden Homes appealed against the council's decision to reject the application.

In February, planners were forced to abandon a public inquiry after too many protestors attended the hearing. Clr Brian Axcell, from Appleton Parish Council, said: "We are disappointed.

"The residents put up a good argument, their comments were noted, but unfortunately the inspector took a different view."
