I SEE from the recent letters page that the Liberal Democrat who challenged the funding of the completion of Halton Stadium is still challenging this and other stadium funding.

The fact he and his party only see community facilities as financial investments to make financial returns is, of course, short sighted.

If the Lib Dem's view prevailed we would never fund anything unless it brought a 'financial' return.

Even the Tories on Halton Council haven't suggested that to date.

His attempt to link council tax increases with funding for completing the stadium is misleading to say the least.

All construction costs for the stadium come under capital expenditure funded by capital receipts. As such, council tax is not paying for the east stand.

He then goes on to say 'the amount of council tax being paid to service the debt is considerable'.

As Halton Council has one of the lowest levels of debt servicing by council tax to any of our neighbouring authorities, including Lib Democrat-run Liverpool, he perhaps needs to check his facts out before taking pen to paper.

The fact he refused to give a clear commitment to support revenue funding for both the Halton Stadium and the new Brindley arts centre in Runcorn sums him and his party up.

As another letter writer wrote last week, the Liberal Democrats seem 'to know the price of everything and the value of nothing.'
