MIDDLEWICH collected two league championships in quick succession last week to become the club of the season in the Mid Cheshire League.

On Tuesday, Barnton's draw with Poynton ensured Middlewich Town were crowned Division One champions.

To make sure of the title and to win the league on merit Middlewich then entertained Bollington and won 4-1 to finish the season on an unassailable 70 points, losing just four games.

On Wednesday Middlewich Reserves sealed the Reserve Division with a 5-1 win over Barnton Reserves.

The two titles have capped an excellent season for Middlewich in which their U16s side also won the Mid Cheshire District Cup and the Sunday League side won their division.

Middlewich manager Terry Murphy said: "I'm made up for the lads.

"The reserves won their league too and it's great for the club and the town.

"It's nice that we could do this so soon after what happened to John McAteer and it's a testimony to his work at the club - he would have been made up."

The trophy chase continues tonight, Wednesday, when Middlewich Town face Middlewich Reserves in a repeat of last season's Mid Cheshire District Cup final.

The match, at Wincham Park kicks off at 7.30pm.

Murphy added: "I spoke to the reserves and they're really looking forward to the match and will be out for revenge after our win last year.

"It should be a good game of football and I know that both sides are really keen to get out there and win it."
