A HOSPITAL radio presenter who lifts the gloom for patients with his cheery chatter and upbeat music has been 'highly-commended' at some top hospital radio awards.

Widnes taxi driver Paul Edwards saw off 300 other entrants to reach the top five in the hotly contested Male Presenter of the Year awards.

"It's one of the best things that has ever been given to me in my life," a delighted Paul said.

"I really enjoy doing my show and for someone to give me an award for doing it is fantastic. To be doing something for charity and be recognised is amazing."

And the key to being king of the hospital airwaves is?

"Always play music people can enjoy and if you've got nothing of interest to say, don't say anything!" the Radio Halton DJ said. "And if you get stuck, playing a daft jingle or a comedy sketch to make them laugh, usually helps"!
