DIXONS electrical store in Widnes is closing in a cull of 106 shops across the country.

The company hopes to find other jobs for the five employees in the Dixons Group, which includes PC World and Currys.

A Dixons' spokesperson said: "As a whole, the Dixons Group has been performing well, however for some time the Dixons' chain has been causing concern.

"Most of the stores that are closing are the smaller high street stores that weren't meeting expectations

"They have rising rental costs, and the margins are very small, it's such a competitive market."

Dixons said shopping habits were also changing, as more people used out of town centre stores with car parking.

The spokesperson said: "We have entered into a 90 day consultation with the employees and we expect to relocate a significant number of these into other stores."

Sir Bill Connor, general secretary of Usdaw, who represent many retail workers, said: "Our members at Dixons deserve to get a full explanation for the reasons behind this decision.

"Usdaw officials are available to offer advice and guidance to all our members at Dixons during this period of uncertainty."
