THE WA1 nightclub played host to a living legend last weekend- former Stone Roses bass player Gary 'Mani' Mounfield.
Now dazzling rock fans with his dexterous playing for Primal Scream, the Mancunian stopped by at the club on Legh Street in the town centre to serve up local indie fans an assortment of classic rock and dance tunes.
As anticipated, the venue was heaving early on but did begin to quiet down as Mani's selections became less mainstream and more eclectic towards the end of the night.
Highlights included Mani's own superb musicianship on The Stone Roses classics Elephant Stone and Fools Gold but it was refreshing to hear songs you wouldn't expect at a typical indie club night, with effortless genre-hopping going from dance and funk to reggae and punk.
A good time was had by all and as ever, the event was superbly arranged by the club's organisers. It was also encouraging to see on display that ex-Smiths bassist Andy Rourke and Inspiral Carpets keyboard player Clint Boon will soon be returning to the club on DJ duties for what promises to be two more top nights of music entertainment.
