I READ today in the Warrington Guardian (June 3) about J Madden and his views about the police not being interested in Walking Day.
I absolutely agree with him, but it is not just the police. Today in the year 2004, Penketh, Sankey, Orford, Padgate and maybe others, have their own Walking Days, that's fair enough, they all have their own reasons, but it has contributed to a shorter procession.
Even so the streets of Warrington on Walking Day are full of well-wishers and church people alike, it is a day for best clothes and almost everyone wishes for the walks to carry on.
It's a funny old world we live in, the walks started as a protest to the Haydock Races (betting) and soon became backed up by certain churches for people to show temperance (moderation in drinking to excess). That is why it is funny because it has turned full circle
The churches of Warrington celebrate their faith by walking through the streets, some go away for the day, some go to Silcock's Fair and some people stay in town and get drunk. Most churches have a good old knees-up on the local playing field. Good luck to everyone, enjoy your Walking Day.
The police can no more take it away from us than the Prime Minister. It is part of Warrington's culture.
