A SCHOOL that caters for children with severe learning difficulties has vowed to step up security after raiders targeted the premises six times in a week and made off with technology equipment worth £10,000.

Computers, digital cameras and other items of ICT equipment were stolen during the raids at Mill Green School in Mill Lane, Newton-le-Willows, with the intruders kicking down doors and smashing windows to gain access.

The incidents are believed to have occurred between May 15 and 22.

Headteacher Paul Cronin, told the Star: "I just can't believe what has happened. Our pupils range from as young as three up to 19 and they are all absolutely devastated.

"We are due for an inspection by Ofsted at the end of June and we have lost a lot of records and other important items of work as a result of the computers being taken.

"This has had such a damaging effect not only on the children, but the teachers as well. Everybody has worked so hard over the past few years and for these people to come along, smash their way in and take things away from us really does anger me.

"We will be stepping up security to hopefully deter any further incidents and I have even had pupils' parents offering to stay on the premises when the school is empty.

"We will also be working closely with the police and the Local Education Authority to see what can be done.

"I would urge anyone with information to contact the police straight away".

Neighbourhood Inspector for Newton, Peter Mallett, told the Star: "Regular meetings have been taking place with the school as regards to improving security. Crime prevention officers have also met with representatives from Mill Green School.

"We have stepped up patrols in the area and will continue to do so in order to try and deter future incidents taking place".
