WINSFORD United are capable of winning North West Counties Division Two - according to manager Dave Twite.

The man in charge is convinced his side has what it takes to claim the title after seeing them turn in good performances against Cheadle and Nelson in the past week.

Twite said: "This league will probably be won by the side that is the most consistent and there is no reason why that can't be us.

"It's getting that run of four or five wins on the bounce that is the key.

"We can do that, but we've got to start turning the screw to get those victories.

"Once we do that the confidence will start oozing."

And Twite's belief in his team seems well placed as they have the best defensive record in the league and have lost just once.

A fact which has seen goalkeeper Matt Conkie win the division's player of the month award for September.

Twite added: "Matt has done really well, but the lads in front of him from the strikers all the way back have defended well and I'm sure Matt would say the same thing.

"Having said that, the lad has come from a higher league and he's a quality player."

And Conkie isn't the only player who has been prepared to drop down a division to play for Winsford.

Nick Boothby, Will Hurley and new signing Rob Drummond have all joined the Blues from North West Counties Division One sides and Twite is convinced it shows that Winsford are on the up.

He said: "It's great for the club to have these players who have the faith to take a drop down to come back up with us. It shows we are doing things right.

"It will probably take a bit of time for this to filter down to the fans and for people to start coming to watch us again, but it's a step in the right direction.

"The pleasing thing is that people want to come and play for Winsford United.

"Players are ringing me all the time and it's great that they want to come and get involved."

Winsford now go on to face next to bottom club Blackpool Mechanics on Saturday in the Second Division Trophy.
