COUNCILLORS are throwing their weight behind objections for a proposed second toll road alongside the M6 to ease traffic congestion.

On Monday night, Middlewich Town Council supported a proposal put forward by Clr Simon McGrory, which highlighted a number of objections to plans for a 50-mile dual lane expressway parallel to the M6, running from a point north of Birmingham to just south of Manchester.

In a report presented to the council, Clr McGrory said the Department of Transport and the Highways Agency should address the transport infrastructure, from junctions 11 to 20, before spending money on promoting the M6 expressway.

He said: "Traffic management along this section must be a priority before any further consultation takes place, together with a revision of the freight rail network to help alleviate the heavy goods vehicle road freight that use the M6 and in fact causes the most problems along this section."

He described the consultation, carried out by the Highways Agency, as 'too narrow' and said the Department of Transport must consider the impact on surrounding areas.

As reported by the Guardian in July, Clr Peter Hirst voiced strong objections to the toll road, expressing concerns about the detrimental effect on the existing congestion in the town, the environment and the disappearance of beauty spots.
