IBO CHAMPION Robin Reid is set to go head-to-head with American IBF king Jeff Lacy next year in a battle to become the number one super-middleweight.

The Runcorn Reaperman and his coach Brian Hughes met with promoter Jess Harding last week to mastermind Reid's raid for the WBA crown.

Puerto Rican champion Manny Sciaca currently holds the title, and Reid will have to get past highly rated Lacy in an eliminator before he lands a shot at the rangy 28-year-old.

New IBF holder Lacy suits Reid more than Nottingham's Carl Froch, who coach Brian Hughes dismissed as 'an empty kettle that makes the most noise' after the Midlander offered to take on Reid and long-term rival Joe Calzaghe.

With Calzaghe still gunning for light-heavyweight glory, Lacy looks the best bet for 33-year-old Reid, who will prepare for the 2005 fight by fighting a ten-rounder in Manchester in late November.

"Robin would take Froch next week if he came to him," said Hughes.

"But Lacy is high up there with Robin in the WBA's rankings whereas Froch is only well known here so that looks the best bet for us at the moment and we're looking forward to it."
