GUNS and stetsons fired the imagination of teenagers to stage their own interpretation of a classic Shakespeare play.

They transformed the Bard's 16th century tale of love and treachery in Twelfth Night into a 2004 dynamic drama.

Wearing big hats and wielding weapons, pupils from The Grange Comprehensive put their own unique twist on the Tudor tale.

Altogether, 200 Halton schoolchildren treaded the boards at The Brindley in a Shakespeare schools festival.

Professional actors from The Royal Shakespeare Company had trained up 12 teachers at workshops last month to help youngsters make their stage debut.

Cllr Allan Massey, board member for education, told them: "This rare opportunity to perform in front of a live audience led by experts from the festival will undoubtedly remain with you for the rest of your lives."

Excerpts from Midsummer Night's Dream, Macbeth, The Tempest, Romeo and Juliet, Taming of the Shrew were performed over three nights last week.

Brookfields, Wade Deacon, The Grange, Chesnut Lodge, Ashley, SS Peter & Paul, Heath, Cavendish, Halton High, St Chad's and Fairfield took part.
