RESIDENTS who use Bank Park are being asked to join a new group in a bid to improve its dilapidated appearance.

Former Great Sankey councillor Jan Davidson has met with Clr Jeff Richards to discuss what could be done to improve the park.

It was decided that residents and park users should set up a Friends of Bank Park Group to apply for grant funding for improvements.

Mrs Davidson said: "It's a mess. It's right in the middle of the town and it should be looked after. I think that there's a lot that needs doing because it could be a lovely park."

Among the improvements needed are: resurfacing of the children's play area and paths, pruning of the trees and shrubs, weeding the flower beds and, more importantly, new lighting to make the park safer.

Mrs Davidson added: "There are no lights. It's dangerous for people walking through there, especially now as the nights are drawing in."

The new group could apply for grants from Waste Recycling Environmental, which uses the landfill tax credit scheme to divert cash into the community.
