TATTON'S tremendous all-round display ensured they pulled off a remarkable upset against their undefeated opponents as two first-half strikes ensured they advanced safely through to the second round of the League Cup.
Gareth Williams got Tatton off to a dream start when goalkeeper Steve Jenyons released Peter Ricket down the left-wing with a long drop-kick.
Ricket was able to shrug off his man and send a searching ball into the path of Williams who was on hand to tap the ball over the line to continue his recent goal-scoring form.
This lead was doubled midway through the first half when Dominic Baker's resistance put the Diamonds' back line under pressure.
With the ball being forced back into the penalty-area, Ricket did well to charge down an attempted clearance that saw the ball bundle off the left-midfielder and into the net for a surprise 2-0 lead. The game's best move failed to produce a third goal for Tatton when Williams showed great skill and awareness to dummy Mark Evans' wide ball to leave it for Michael Vant.
With the Diamonds' defence seemingly nowhere, the Tatton skipper was unlucky to see his powerful effort curl inches wide from the edge of the area. Diamonds applied the pressure in the second half but great defensive performances from Joe Taviner, Mark Warren and Michael Pearson helped earn Tatton their first clean sheet of the season and a well-deserved win.
