THE Hornets started brightly and twice went close to scoring. But it was Burtonwood who took the lead when their speedy centre broke the line from just inside his own half and outpaced the defence for a try.

The Hornets equalised when Dean Ainsworth took a Jack Owens' pass and beat three defenders on a jinking run to the line.

Burtonwood hit back and put the Hornets under constant pressure with continuous attacks and a clever kicking game.

The Hornets defended well and were relieved to hear the whistle for the end of the first half.

Man of the match Owens was again instrumental in the next try as the Hornets began to hit form feeding George McGrogan who cut back inside to go over.

The lead was stretched further when Lewis Hulme scooted over after a fantastic run from Jack Buck. The Hornets couldn't finish off Burtonwood and it was their stand off who went the full length after an unforced error.

The Hornets eventually secured victory with two tries from coach's award winner Jack Roberts after unselfish play from Mark Percival, Jack Buck and Dean Ainsworth.

Top trainer Kenny Curlett ran strong and top tackler Jack Gilhooley tackled well.

Man of the match, sponsored by Gary Arrowsmith, was Rhys Fletcher, scoring four tries.

Nathan Lyons scored a good try and overall the Hornets were awesome in only their second game.
