EMERGENCY services pulled a body from the Mersey at Bridge Foot yesterday morning (Monday).

As the Guardian Midweek went to press, a police spokesman confirmed that a man's body was recovered from the river at Chester Road.

He said: "Police are investigating and are making inquiries about the identification of the man."

He said a post mortem examination was due to take place on Monday afternoon.

A Warrington Fire Service spokesman said firefighters attended the scene but they turned the matter over to the police when the body was recovered. Fire crews and police were called to the waterside, close to Mr Smith's nightclub, at 9.37am and sealed-off the area.

The police spokesman said Cheshire Police's underwater search unit had been dispatched to search the river.

l The identity of a decomposed body found in Winwick last month has still not been confirmed.

Police hope DNA tests will reveal the identity of the body, believed to be that of a man. Clothing on the body is similar to that worn by a person who has been reported missing from home in Warrington. The body was found lying beside the A579 Winwick Link Road, between B&Q and the M6, at 12.22pm on Monday, November 22. It is believed that it had been there for a considerable amount of time.
