Tenants have been told to move on so that a prime site on the outskirts of Knutsford can be redeveloped.

Three companies and volunteers, who produce Knutsford's talking newspaper for the blind, have been told to vacate the Birkin Centre and nearby buildings before their leases expire in April.

"The council regrets the problems that this will cause the tenants but the existing buildings are in very poor condition," said a spokesman for Macclesfield Borough Council.

On Friday Tony Evans, owner of Knutsford's Tyre and Exhaust Centre, said he was now searching for a new home for his business.

"We've been here 14 years and I've no idea where we will go to," he said. "I will have to start hunting but there isn't really anywhere in Knutsford to move to." Last week Clr Tony Ranfield vowed to find new premises for the Knutsford and District Talking Newspaper, which was formed by Knutsford Lions 25 years ago.

He said there might be room for the volunteers and their recording equipment at the Council Offices or at the civic centre.

"We wouldn't want the organisation to fold up because of this," he said.

"This is a vital service for residents and we are doing everything we can to find somewhere else for them."

The council wants to demolish the Birkin Centre so it can improve the look of the site. But it might also need the land for the creation of the proposed new access road to the Parkgate Industrial Estate.
