WIDNES St Maries continued their promotion push with victory over Accrington.

Ronnie Wharton created the first opening for Mike Stevenson to power through only to be called back.

Kieran Walker, Mark Birmingham and Ste O'Brien made in-roads for Kev Birmingham to go close before Mark put Athena Security man of the match Carl Leach in under the sticks.

Leach returned the compliment making the break for Liam Johnson's first try. Joe Swazicar and Ray Grace made tremendous yards for the visitors with their man of the match Danny Louden being held up on the line by Greg Lawrenson.

A break from the ever-improving Johnson put flyer Stevenson in and Leach scored his second after a dummy from John Lepts.

With four tries, three conversions from Johnson, Widnes led 22-0 at half-time.

Drives from Rob Council, John Borrowman and Terry Owen came before a penalty earned the visitors their only points.

Russ McLellan barged over from 10 metres, Mark Brindle added the extras.

Another Borrowman drive and a massive break from Jay Brown took O'Brien just short before Lepts sidestepped over for a try.

It was 30 minutes before the Maries scored again, Neil Higgins throwing a ball out to Johnson to surge home.

Man of the match for the hosts was Leach pushed all the way by Johnson and Brown but a good all round performance.

The Maries travel to Warrington's Bank Quay Bulls next Saturday.

The Arriva conference side travel to Heworth in York, both games kick off at 2pm.
