A FLEET of new Jaguars carried the final evidence for a second crossing over the bridge, bound for London this week.

The latest painstaking research shows there is nothing to stop ministers saying 'yes' to the newly named Mersey Gateway, says Halton Council.

"We have looked at everything the Government asked of us," said leader Cllr Tony McDermott.

"We are satisfied we have found all the answers.

"Once we get the green light, I am confident there will be major interest from major contractors."

The more cash the Treasury puts in, he said, the smaller the expected tolls on both bridges would be.

"We want a free to user bridge but we are realists," said Cllr McDermott. "If the Government says there has to be tolling or no bridge, I am sure local people and businesses who currently suffer the horrendous daily congestion will agree it is the only solution."

Halton MPs have urged Transport Secretary Alistair Darling to keep the bridge free for local people.

MPs Derek Twigg and Mike Hall met him in London last Wednesday to ask for a special exemption.

Mr Darling accepted the case for the new bridge has been made but now the crunch decision is how it will be funded.

The bid still needs to be assessed, he stressed, and the financial implications fully explored.

Mr Twigg, said: "We had a very useful meeting and although there is no certainty of a decision in the spring, we remain hopeful it will be decided then.

"We will continue to press the case at every opportunity. In particular, the need for any financial package to allow local people to cross free of charge."

Mike Hall, said: "We are not quite there yet but I am absolutely confident of the case for a second Mersey crossing.

"Local residents should cross for free. A yes decision is not only important to ease congestion, but the economic benefits for the area are massive and will help ensure economic prosperity for years to come."

Huge support from companies such as Jaguar, regional MPs, plus public and private sector organisations has been pledged.

People who register their support for the crossing by logging on to www.merseygateway.co.uk could win a VIP tour of Jaguar's Halewood plant.

The winner of a special draw will be chauffeur driven in a Jaguar and treated to lunch, with three friends or relatives.
