A MASSIVE new health centre is now being built in Moor Lane, Widnes.

Several doctors surgeries will move into the modern building, or open branches at the site.

It will also have a minor surgery suite, a pharmacy and community health services.

MP Derek Twigg was at the official start of work last week, along with staff from Halton Primary Care Trust.

Jim Wilson, chair of Halton PCT said: "This project has been one of our greatest priorities since its creation two and a half years ago. It's great to see it get off the ground. I'm confident it will be a huge asset for the community."

The practices moving in are New Town, Town House and Ditton Branch Surgery.

Dr David Lyon, chair of the PCT's professional committee, said: "The staff working in doctors practices and in the community have never lacked enthusiasm or skill.

"But finally, the people of Widnes are getting the top class facilities they deserve.

"It will be an exciting and an attractive place to work. This development is good for staff and all the people of Widnes."

The £6m centre will be on land between the tax office and the bus depot.

The work will be carried out being by a private company, funded by a partnership of local health bodies including Halton Primary Care Trust.
