Widnes U15s 10 Tarleton U15s 14

WIDNES were denied victory in the dying minutes after the referee said Chris Semple bounced the ball going over the try line.

Tarleton raced to a 14-point first half lead but the Wids had their moments with Griffiths, Hulme and Barton all held up over the try line.

The second half was more open, Morgan, Semple and McNally all went close before man of the match Varley powered over from 20 metres.

Varley went over again from a five-metre scrum to put Widnes back in the game.

Great tackling by Tarleton denied Watmore, Hatton, Williamson and Harrison going over.

BACKS Gartland, Yates, McGarry and Long all made excellent runs with the ball.

Forwards Brennan, Varley and Shuttleworth won secure ball with good rucking.

Chris Birchall scored two tries as did Darryl Bold, with fellow forwards Lang, Wright and Hasaballa also crossing for tries.

Scrum half Oliver's distribution was excellent and new centre Brown looked threatening.

In the backs, Schofield, Pinder, Jones and a well deserved rare try for playmaker Nelson rounded off the scoring.

WIDNES U12s returned to Huddersfield to defend last year's trophy.

Thompson (7) was superb in attack he cut through the lines time and again.

Smith (3) bagged a hat trick and made at least the same again with well-crafted and timed passing.

Once again the Wids pack took control and made slick ball available to the back division.

Morris sucked in the tacklers and rarely failed to offload to supporting players, Mercer was always there at the breakdowns and was extremely brave in support.

Price, who improves with every game, played with a skill and strength.

Buckle (4) roamed the edges of the loose and was always looking for the opposition fly half.

Phillips' kicking got the side out of trouble many times and his penalty kicking was devastatingly accurate, gaining ground for the side.

Scrum half Glover was central to the back's attacks and his good clean ball from the set pieces and loose provided a sound platform for the Wids' aggressive game plan.

Rugan was excellent in defence while both Molyneaux and Leather are getting more confident.

Fearless tackling, selfless passing and intelligent running meant Doolan (2) was always in the thick of it.

Captain Hough again stopped countless attacks down his wing.

Crank's safe hands and vision meant few opposition attacks succeeded and many Widnes attacks originated from his runs into space.

THE Wids won all four games against Fylde.

Only nine players travelled to Lytham but they all excelled.

Much of the play was directed by halfbacks Rowley and Cooke who linked well with centres Milling and Jennet.

Wings Donohue and Ward stretched the home side on the flanks time after time.

Props Cassidy and Jones were devastating both in defence and with ball in hand.

Full back Kelly covered well and regularly attacked from deep.
