A WORRIED Middlewich resident has spoken out about a lack of amenities in the town amid doubts over the fate of multi-million plans for an Olympic-size swimming pool.

Tim Cookson was speaking after organisers of the plan for the facility last week warned that the ambitious project could fall through unless residents voice their official backing.

Middlewich could face losing out on the pool unless Sport England, which would be one of the project's main backers, can be given hard justification for the facility.

Plans have been proposed by Midpoint Sports Ltd, which is urging householders, residents' groups, community clubs and disabled groups to step forward with their views on the proposals in writing.

Responding to a story in last week's Guardian, Mr Cookson said the town is one of the fastest growing communities in the area but is only growing in the number of people.

He said: "We have to leave the town to swim, play football or badminton etc. We don't have any more shops or restaurants.

"We don't have a full time fire station or police station. We need all the facilities we can get to accommodate the number of people now in the town, we have even done all we can to accommodate the travelling community but still we get nothing to help us entertain everyone.

"We are the poor relations, we get saddled with dumps and gas plants, motorway widening and we have to wait ages for a bypass."

A final decision on the future of the scheme is expected to be taken by Sport England and the Government Office for the North West.
