A GROUP of volunteers have taken to the streets to make Winsford a more attractive place in time for Christmas.

Members of the Oxygen Group, which works with young people in the town, went on a litter pick around Cheviot Square to tidy the area up and encourage young people to do the same.

Neil Garratt, a member of the group, said: "We plan to carry out events like this once a month and hopefully make a difference in the area. We would like the kids to join in with us and I'm hopeful they will."

The Oxygen Group holds its meetings at the Winsford Centre in Cheviot Square and regularly goes out on the streets to meet and talk to young people.

Neil said: "We love this town and we want the kids to love it just as much.

"I go to church on a Sunday morning and there are broken bottles and litter everywhere.

"We really don't want that and hopefully after the litter pick the kids will see how much better it is without all the litter.

"Our aim is to raise a positive profile of the youths because we see a lot of potential in them. Once they get to know and trust us and see that we are doing something for the good of the area then they will respect us and we can make a difference."
