Widnes RUFC 1st XV 13

Aspatria RUFC 1st XV 13

THE Wids gained a well-deserved point against the Cumbrians from Aspatria.

Widnes started the game the stronger and should have scored when Michael Bowles picked up a lose ball 60 metres out.

But instead of putting his head down and going for the line he looked for support 20 metres out and was caught.

The Wids led through a Phil Glover penalty but Aspatria responded with a penalty on 33 minutes and a Mark Beverly try and Conrad Jansen conversion just before half time.

The Wids went further behind at the start of the second half when Jansen knocked over his second penalty.

After Jansen missed a simple penalty kick, the home side started to use two-man lineouts.

When they won a lineout 40 metres from the Aspatria line, Hussey made a break and gave a short pass to Alex Gardiner, who darted under the posts. Glover converted.

On 67 minutes, Widnes declined a penalty kick, going instead for a tap penalty move but the ball was knocked on in midfield.

Widnes levelled when Glover converted a penalty and right on time another break by Hussey created space for Richard Barraclough.

He released Tommy Ledson but great cover by the visitors saw Ledson tackled into touch 18 metres short of the line.

Deep into injury time Glover hit the upright from near the halfway line with a penalty attempt. This week Widnes travel to Aspull.
