Bank Quay Bulls A 4 Widnes St Maries 22

WIDNES St Maries started well with drives by Paul Whitley and Athena Security man of the match Ste O'Brien.

A high tackle stopped a Lee Potter intercept but Tony Ireland missed the penalty.

He made amends minutes later after Carl Leach gained another penalty.

Terry Owens drove from his line on the restart, fed O'Brien then Mark Keenan who put flying winger Mike Stevenson in for the first try.

The Bulls should have pulled one back after 35 minutes but Paul Rose knocked on when grounding.

Potter fed Kieran Walker who unselfishly slipped a one-handed pass for Stevenson to score his second.

Neil Higgins went close and John Lepts was stopped just short to bring the half time whistle at 0-12.

The second half saw John Borrowman dummy two men to go clear but he passed to Bank Quay's full back Barry Tyrer instead of his own player Higgins.

Bulls were then awarded a couple of dubious penalties, winger Paul Harrison scoring from one.

A Leach charge was stopped by the official who awarded the Maries a penalty, again missed.

Potter and Lepts combined to put in Leach out wide with Keenan missing the difficult kick.

Paul Carroll and Mike Bates were outstanding in this half but sterling work from O'Brien, Leach and Liam Johnson kept the Bulls out.

Potter completed the try scoring when he barged over under the sticks giving Stevenson an easy conversion.

The Maries travel to Swinton's Folly Lane next Saturday.

The Arriva Conference side entertain Ovenden of Halifax at home in the GMB cup, kick-off 2pm.

Widnes St Maries 32 Accrington 6

WIDNES St Maries continued their promotion push against Accrington.

Ronnie Wharton created the first opening for Mike Stevenson to power through only to be called back.

Kieran Walker, Mark Birmingham and Ste O'Brien made in roads for Kev Birmingham to go close before Mark Birmingham put Athena Security man of the match Carl Leach in under the sticks.

Leach returned the compliment making the break that made Liam Johnson's first try.

Joe Swazicar and Ray Grace made tremendous yards for the visitors with their man of the match Danny Louden being held up on the line by Greg Lawrenson.

A break from Johnson put flyer Stevenson in and Leach scored his second after John Lepts' dummy.

Four tries and three conversions from Johnson gave a half time score of 22-0.

The hosts continued with drives from Rob Council, John Borrowman and Terry Owen before a penalty earned the visitors their first and only points.

Russ McLellan barged over from 10 metres and Mark Brindle added the extras.

Another Borrowman drive and a massive break from the hardworking Jay Brown took O'Brien just short before Lepts with another sidestep made himself a try.

Neil Higgins threw a ball out to Johnson to surge home.

Man of the match for the hosts was Leach pushed all the way by Johnson and Brown but a good all round performance.
