Pupils named in train-on squad

FOUR Warrington pupils have been named in the English Schools under 16s train-on squad that is preparing for 2005 fixtures against France and Wales.

Mike Cooper, Jacob Emmitt, Lee Mitchell and Tony Rourke are named in the squad of 22 players that is expected to be cut back to 20 early in the new year.

All four players are attached to Warrington Wolves and attend four different schools.

Mike studies at Bridgewater High School, Jacob attends Lymm High School, Lee is a pupil at St Aelreds School in Newton and Tony goes to William Beamont High School.

Hockey heroines

WARRINGTON women's hockey team ended the year on a high note on Saturday when they subjected Runcorn to a 10-1 defeat.

This means that Warrington will go into the second half of the season in a mid-table position.

Stephanie Rawlins netted six times against Runcorn, who were only able to field nine players.

Midfielder Lisa Hartley was named player of the match.

Warrington's next game is at Chester on January 6, 2004.

Anyone interested in joining the team should contact Alex Mitchell on 723997.

Winter Sweeps

WARRINGTON Public Parks' Bowls League will be holding a Winter Sweep at Victoria Park on Sunday.

There will be a 9.15am draw for a 9.30am start and the entrance fee is £3.

To enter contact Ivan on 637598.

Sunday's sweep winner was Lovely Lane ace Norman Sutton, who beat Newtown player Jimmy Cunningham 21-19 in the final.

The losing semi-finalists were Alan Brettle and Peter Rowles.

Electrical hitches

GRAPPENHALL policeman Jamie Thompson was a member of a Peugeot 205 team which finished 73rd in the three-day and 40-stage Lombard RAC Revival Rally.

Thompson was co-driver and he said a much better finish would have been achieved had it not been for electrical problems on the first day.
