WHISKY with tea is the secret of long life, joked the daughter of a woman who celebrated her 100th birthday on Sunday.

Lucy Hipkiss, who was born on December 5, 1904, lived for 70 years on Padgate Lane but now resides at Woodleigh Care Home in Callands.

On Sunday she celebrated her centenary with more than 100 family and friends, including her 86-year-old sister Dorothy Fogg, who flew over from California.

Lucy's daughter Marjorie Smith said: "The party was absolutely amazing and mum was delighted to receive her letter from the Queen.

"The staff were stars and put on a show for mum. We all had such a good laugh. We always joke that mum is so well for her age because she likes whisky with a dash of tea, rather than tea with a dash of whisky."

Lucy worked at Cockhedge mill until she married her late husband Eric, who was a bus conductor in Warrington.

She has two children, four grand children and six great-grand children.
