MASSIVE equipment is changing Warrington's skyline as work on the temporary bus station began this week.

It is the first time the 40ft Giken Rig, which was manufactured in Japan, has been used in the UK.

Concrete piles are needed so the temporary bus station, at the corner of Midland Way and Winwick Street, is able to take the weight of the new Warrington Bus Station.

A spokesman said: "The rig uses hydraulics to push cylinder concrete foundations or piles into the ground which, in contrast with traditional hammering techniques, means that any noise is minimised.

"The site is self-contained so will not result in any traffic disruption."

The work will continue until February 2005, when major development work at Golden Square will begin.

The pedestrian underpass at the end of Bewsey Street is now closed, as is the footbridge leading from Bewsey Street to Golden Square.

Revised routes for pedestrians and cyclists have been agreed with Warrington Borough Council and signs have been put up to direct people.

Some street lighting on Midland Way has been temporarily removed and replaced with flood lighting.
