VULCAN became the first team to be scalped by Fearnhead this season in Warrington Soccer League's Premier Division.

Several returning players started the game for second-placed Vulcan but they were unable to prevent basement team Fearnhead deservedly snatching victory.

Vulcan manager Derek McGowan said afterwards: "Our passing wasn't quick enough and our finishing was worse than poor."

After five minutes of play the referee had to leave the game as he pulled a hamstring. Quite a long stoppage then followed as the Vulcan secretary volunteered to referee the game.

Eventually play restarted with Vulcan having the greater share of possession but they could not create any chances until the opening goal, which came from the head of Jones as he latched on to Eaves' cross at the second attempt.

Fearnhead responded in the perfect way as they equalised within minutes. A cross evaded the back four and the Fearnhead forward finished clinically.

The second half started with the home side on top but Fearnhead were far too organised for the Vulcan attack.

Some quick passing from McGowan made space for Salihi but he could not finish.

Bailey intercepted a Fearnhead attack but he and Salihi could not capitalise as the ball was given away.

Several crosses from Bromley were put into the box but the Fearnhead goalkeeper cleared every one unchallenged.

Vulcan continued to press forward but Fearnhead broke away and scored with a superb half volley that smashed the post and dropped into the goal.

Vulcan again pressed forward for an equaliser but Fearnhead were far too strong and time eventually ran out.

Vulcan Reserves fared a lot better as they defeated Moore United 9-0.
