POLICE are clamping down on motorists in Orford who use Smith Road as a short cut.

Residents who live in the street have complained to officers that drivers are cutting through Smith Drive, despite the fact it is a restricted road. Neighbours have also complained that motorists are frequently breaking the 30mph speed limit enforced there.

Police say Smith Drive is clearly signposted ‘Except for Access’, meaning it should only be used if a driver is going to a specific destination, such as a house on that street.

Warning letters have already been sent to car users who have been caught using the road illegally.

Anyone caught twice will be served with a fixed penalty notice and a £30 fine.

Officers will continue to monitor Smith Drive at key times of the day such as rush hour. There are also concerns that the problem could extend to Withers Avenue and Hallows Avenue.

Sgt Helen Ratcliffe said: “Drivers should be sticking to the rules but it has become clear that some motorists are choosing to ignore this and are using Smith Drive as a through road.

“This is breaking the law and is causing considerable nuisance to residents. If the problem persists action will be taken.

“Restrictions are put in place for a reason.”

Clr Mike Hannon welcomed the action.

He said: “We receive regular complaints regarding the volume and speed of vehicles who use Smith Drive as a shortcut and have had numerous meetings to resolve the issue without success.” The Central Neigbourhood Action Team can be contacted on 0845 458 6379.
